Certified mail by the court, process server named on court approved list or Alaska State Trooper website: www.dps.state.ak.us/ast, or peace officer. All out-of-state service must be delivered by a peace officer.

Defendant may request the case be transferred to regular district court within 20 days of service if asserted counterclaim exceeds $10,000 and defendant refuses to waive the excess. Plaintiff may request a transfer within 10 days of defendant's Answer.

Either party can appeal the judgment for review of law, not fact, to Superior Court if the claim is for more than $50, and filed within 30 days of judgment distribution.

Defendant must file written answer within 20 days of service or plaintiff can file for a default judgment. If defendant has a valid excuse for filing late the court may allow the defendant to answer if default judgment has not been entered. If defendant requests a change of venue in it's answer plaintiff receives 20 days from the date the court sends plaintiff the notice of defendant's answer to oppose the request.
